Did you know, that Video itself can’t be understood by search engines? Video SEO or Video Search Engine Optimization uses different types of textual descriptions and code to tell search engines what your video is all about. This allows search engines to properly index your video, which improves its ranking and visibility in search results. In the simplest terms, Video SEO makes your video easier to find and watch.
I have to start by saying that the best Video SEO isn’t simply tacked onto your completed video. The Best Video SEO is built from the ground up technically and creatively, marrying code with compelling content focused on reaching your target audience.
So, what is Video SEO? In part 1 today, I’ll introduce you to the Video SEO rules, tools and a strategy that will help you achieve a specific business goal.
Let’s say your goal is use video to drive traffic to your website. Here are a some Video SEO best practices:
Place each of your videos on a dedicated page. Incredibly important. If you have multiple videos on a page, search engines will likely see and index only the first video and dismiss the rest.
Create captions for your videos. Captions allow search engines to read and index your video’s content. Captions also let you reach the hearing impaired, or allows viewers to watch your video and read the captions when having the sound on just isn’t an option.
Create a video transcript and place it on the page below your video. Again, this is another way to let search engines read and index your video’s content.
Create a video XML sitemap and submit it to Google and Bing. -a video sitemap creates a rich video snippet.
A rich snippet looks like this. As you can see it not only contains a keyword rich title and description of the video, but it also contains a video thumbnail.
Search results containing a video rich snippet have significantly higher click-through rates than organic text links.
The last step is to start driving the traffic to your website by posting links to each video’s dedicated page. You can post the link to Facebook, Linkedin, Google+ and Twitter. Let me stress, you’re not posting the video itself but a link to each video on your website.
